Possible Conditions That Cause Difficulty Swallowing

When a person suffers from difficulty swallowing it can be very frustrating. These conditions can have several causes. Some of them are accidental while others are related to disease. The inability to swallow can be a temporary or chronic. The condition of difficulty swallowing can be temporary or ongoing. The thing that is the same is that it is frustrating. Breathing challenges can stem from swallowing ones.

The most common reason that people cannot swallow well is because of a cold. A cold with a sore throat can cause it to be painful to swallow while eating or getting rid of excess saliva in the month. There can also be restriction from a build up of phlegm.

One reason that someone might have this condition is because they are suffering a panic attack. Panic attacks can manifest themselves in a couple of ways that will hinder swallowing. The throat can become swelled to the point of being restrictive. Panic attacks can also cause hyperactive breathing which can make swallowing and breathing almost impossible.

The throat can become injured through a severe cut or blunt trauma. These injuries to the throat certainly can make it hard to swallow. These conditions will sometimes heal with no lasting challenges. Other times there may be conditions that permanently make it hard to swallow.

A foreign object on top of the epiglottis is what leads to what is called choking. This is a sudden loss of the ability to swallow. It is also keeps the person from breathing. It must be gotten rid of or the person will die. The maneuver that is used to save someone is called the Heimlich.

There are others who suffer chronic swallowing difficulties because of diseases. The main culprit for this is cancer. There are throat cancers that will results in the inability or or restrictions in swallowing. Thyroid cancer can also effect swallowing. Those who lose the ability to swallow must take in nutrition in other ways.

Another conditions that can cause swelling to the throat area is allergies. For minor reactions medicines can be used to prevent or treat them. Severe reactions require a trip to the hospital. Some people have life threatening allergic reactions. Any loss of this ability can be disconcerting.

Eating foods that one is allergic to can also create this type of attack. This can also be caused by a bee sting. A severe reaction to things like pollen can cause throat restriction.

Difficulty swallowing can be ongoing or temporary. Either challenge is frustrating. Challenges in swallowing often lead to challenges in breathing.
