Infertility In No Way Means That A Couple Cannot Have A Child

By Diana Saunders

The desire to have a child is a very strong one and millions of couples cannot wait for the day when they become parents. Sadly, many couple simply does not seem able to conceive a child and this sometimes causes problems in the relationship. Fortunately, medical science has achieved a stage where it is often possible to help such couples to conceive and to start a family of their own. Infertility is no longer a permanent sentence.

There are many possible reasons for being unable to conceive. Men may have a low or even absent sperm count. Certain diseases and treatments such as chemotherapy may also render a man infertile. Women may have blocked fallopian tubes or ovulation problems. The condition can even be caused by alcohol abuse, smoking and many different drugs. Even age and the fitness level of either partner can play an important role.

The inability to conceive can often be overcome by making simple changes. Both partners should know what their risk factors are and they should change aspects of their lifestyles that may cause or contribute toward their inability to conceive. Giving up smoking, following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and dealing with obesity have all helped a large number of couples to fall pregnant naturally.

When medical help seems to be the only option, the first priority of the medical practitioner is to pinpoint the exact reason why the couple cannot conceive. Treatment can only commence once the underlying problem has been identified. Both partners will have to submit to a thorough physical examination and there are numerous tests that aim to pinpoint reason for being infertile.

If it turns out that the male partner is the reason why the couple cannot conceive there are several treatment options. Some men have blockages that prevent the sperm from moving into the semen. Simple surgery can easily resolve this problem. Men that suffer from impotence or premature ejaculation can receive therapy and medication. When too few sperm is the problem, sperm can be removed surgically too.

Much can also be done to increase the fertility of women. There are several medicines available that are used to ensure a healthy ovulation cycle. Problems with ovulation can have several causes and in some cases more than one drug is prescribed. Many women fail to conceive because they have too many male hormones. This can also be treated with drugs. Patience is required because treatment may have to continue for several months.

No medical treatment is completely without risk. The drugs used to increase the fertility in women may cause severe side effects in a few rare cases. Psychological problems can occur when the treatment does not seem to work and many women find themselves depressed, exhausted and disillusioned when they fail to conceive even after making the effort to stick to the treatment regime.

Many couples desiring a child can be helped by medical science, but success is not guaranteed. If treatment fails, couples can still consider a surrogate or even adoption. It is interesting to note that many couples that opted for adoption eventually conceive a child of their own at a later stage.
