Learn More About Dental Forceps

By Chloe Gib

Forceps are generally tools found in the field of medicine and they are used by doctors and surgeons to grab things that are small to be grasped by fingers. However, the tool is used in various medical operations and fields. There are two types of dental forceps. One type is called exodontia which is usually used in removing teeth. The other name for exodontias is extraction instruments. Another type is known as transfer forceps and they are used in moving instruments from a sterilizer to the tray.

These tools are categorized into two according to their designs. The devices are hinged and have a flat surface on their ends, which makes easier to hold things together. The hinges can be found in the other end of the surface that is flat, which makes it to look like an oversize tweezers. The other design is similar to scissors only that they do not have blades.

Dr Misch asserts that this tool is very crucial especially while doing medical operations. This is so since surgeons cannot reach some body parts such as the veins and arteries without the tool. If you use the tool, you will avoid causing harm to close parts of the body.

In the dentist field, the tools are used in different types of teeth. Universal forceps or criers can be used in the maxillary teeth or the upper jaw. Criers are also used in operating on the incisors. As for the cuspids and the premolars, the design of tool used is called bayonet.

Moreover, you can use these tools to stick gauze into the patients open wound. The tool can also be used to put bandages to stop blood flow without harming nearby blood vessels and organs. If you use it on the above mentioned function, you must clean it appropriately using disinfectants to kill germs.

To know if the tool is made for removal of teeth, it must have a hook on its tips so as to help in greater leverage. The ends also known as beaks are designed in that they fit perfectly around the top of the teeth that is meant for extraction. Nonetheless, the patients' area around the mouth should not be distracted by teeth extraction.

Thus, it is good to choose a good surgeon to carry out the surgical process in order for it to be successful. The doctor you choose must be able to hold dental forceps with care. In addition, he or she must be highly qualified.
