Here Is How To Sew A Cool Bag For Your Tanning Supplies

By Haywood Raptis

With warm weather coming, it is time to start thinking about getting a tan. Having all of your tanning supplies in the same bag will be a time-saver when you are ready to dash off and soak up the sun. A few minutes now saves time searching for tanning supplies later.

Making a special bag is one way to keep all your tanning supplies together. It is also a way to save money, recycle used clothing and get a cool new bag to carry tanning supplies in without leaving the house. A one of a kind bag will also be easier to spot at the beach, lake or tanning salon.

Get together all the items you need for this project. Choose a heavy-duty cotton tank top that does not fit any more, or that you just do not wear. You may also just choose one that will look cool as a bag. Avoid material that is overly stretchy. Your bag may stretch too much when it is filled with tanning supplies. If you are not a tank top wearer, select a suitable T-shirt instead. Grab some sewing shears and several straight pins. Sewing on a sewing machine is easiest, but you can use a needle and some heavy duty thread if you do not have one. Even if you are not much of a sewer, anyone can make this bag before going tanning.

Turn the shirt inside out and pin the bottom hem together with the straight pins. Line it up as even as possible, but do not worry too much as this seam will be inside the bag. You want to finish quickly and start filling your bag with tanning supplies.

Using a one quarter inch seam allowance, close the bottom of the shirt. For added seam strength, back-stitch a couple of times with the sewing machine. If you are hand sewing the seam, double knot the thread and sew small stitches as evenly as you are able. You do not want your tanning supplies to rip the seam. If you use a shirt that you think is too big for your tanning supplies, you can cut off some of the bottom hem before you sew, or just increase the seam allowance.

Pull out the pins and turn the shirt so the right side is out. An extra step is required now if you used a T-shirt. Carefully cut the sleeves off to make your handles. Try not to cut them too thin. Heavy tanning supplies might cause thin straps to break. If you used a tank top, your handles are already formed. Consider cutting off any ribbing from around the neck to make the opening larger.

If you do not have a T-shirt or tank top at home, try the local thrift shop, Goodwill store, or visit a few neighborhood yard sales for supplies. If you are lucky you might even find a mesh tank top. This is the perfect shirt to make a beach bag out of to store tanning supplies.

Put all your tanning supplies in your new bag. There should be plenty of room for a towel, reading material, tanning lotion, snacks, music and a sunhat. Grab your bag of supplies and head to the beach, lake or front yard, wherever tanning is the best.
