A brand of gabapentin is Neurontin. Like the generic anticonvulsant medication, Neurontin is used to treat seizures and chronic neuropathic pain such as the pain of diabetes and shingles. It is also prescribed for concussions and the treatment of withdrawal symptoms related to alcohol and narcotic addiction. In addition, it can be used to alleviate chronic hiccups, headaches and restless leg syndrome.

Neurontin has been used to treat psychiatric disorders, although it has not been approved for this. Still, psychiatrists may prescribe it for chronic pain. In that environment, it may also be prescribed for migraines and psychological disorders even though this is consider an off label use.

Most literature about Neurontin suggests it has very little recreational value or potential for abuse. Sporadic online forum posts claim the drug causes a buzz that is similar to pot and at higher doses will cause sedative-like nodding out. In an interesting conflict of science Neurontin is said to increase sex drive but may also lead to impotence.

Some fibromyalgia sufferers have found pain relief with Neurontin. Also, some cancer patients have found it helps with pain management. It may also mitigate the symptoms of withdrawal for addicts coming off of various narcotics. And it has proven to be a broad spectrum analgesic. In some cases it has been used to treat involuntary eye movement.

Studies of Neurontin use for menopause symptoms is promising. Studies further reveal that the drug can relieve the pain of multiple sclerosis and minimizes the spasticity of the disease as well. Obsessive itching, or uremic pruritus, caused by the buildup of toxins beneath the skin during renal failure can be managed with this medication too. Neurontin is known to enter the breast milk of nursing mothers, but the impact this has on the child is unclear.

Neurontin has been used to reduce menopausal symptoms with promising results. It effectively treats anxiety when anxiety is associated with bipolar disorder, but it has only limited usefulness when treating social anxiety disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder, insomnia or depression.

Like most drugs, Neurontin can have side effects and may interact with other drugs. Some of these interactions and side effects may be severe and include drowsiness, thoughts of self-harm, mood swings and difficulty breathing. This drug should not be used if you are performing tasks that require alertness and fast reactions, such as operating machinery, driving or piloting an aircraft.
