Important Information For Patients Before They Undergo A Micro Laser Peel

By Elaine Guthrie

In order to enjoy tighter, younger-looking skin it is no longer necessary to undergo painful, invasive procedures that take a long time to heal. One of the most recent offerings in cosmetic procedures is the quick, effective, and highly individualized micro laser peel treatment. As the old, tired cells are ablated, new ones will regenerate to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone, lines, and other flaws. Before undergoing this procedure, Cincinnati, OH patients should be sure they understand what to expect.

Minimally invasive, this treatment involves the use of a laser beam for the purpose of removing the damaged cells of the epidermis. Following the procedure, new cell growth is stimulated, a process which results in evenly toned skin with a healthy glow, and the removal of unwanted spots, lines, and scars.

The majority of patients choose this treatment for the face or neck, but some also opt to have it done on their hands or chest as well. During a consultation, the cosmetic surgeon will examine the skin, and obtain a medical background from the patient to determine if this procedure is appropriate. Some conditions may disqualify the patient from being a suitable candidate. Smokers will be advised to quit smoking at least a month before the procedure.

In some cases the patient may only need one treatment to see a notable improvement in the skin. Others may require further applications until they obtain the results they want. It is possible to safely undergo a micro peel again after 8 weeks have passed.

Prior to beginning the procedure, the treatment area will be cleansed and the patient will be given protective eye shields. After the surgeon positions the laser above the skin, it will move in a path which is controlled by a computerized scanner. Typical treatment time is between 15 and 30 minutes depending on how large an area is being treated. A topical anesthetic may be administered for deeper level procedures, very little pain is experienced.

It is normal for the skin to appear and feel like it has been sunburned at first. Redness, swelling, and tenderness can be expected, and the skin may appear somewhat loose before it peels off in the next few days. Most patients fully recover in less than one week, and return to work after 3 or 4 days.

Patients must ensure that they adhere to the skincare program, including the use of any special products, during the recovery period if they are to experience quick healing and optimal results. If exposure to direct sunlight cannot be avoided, a sunblock with a high SPF should be used when outside.

Once full healing has taken place, results should be noticeable. This usually takes about 3 or 4 days, at which point the patient should recognize a marked improvement in the tone and texture of the complexion. Since only the top layer of skin is treated, the results are seen more quickly than with comparable procedures which penetrate more deeply into the dermal layers.
