Depression is a serious condition that affects millions of Americans. This is a condition that will lead a person to disruption in their life. It can interfere with their family life, their work and their own sense of self.

When it comes to depression there are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings associated with the condition. One of the biggest is the belief that it is all in the persons mind or that they can "get over it" if they just try harder to be happy. The truth is that depression is a chemical condition that cannot only affect the thought patterns of a person but also the way the entire body functions.

What are some of the warning signs that you or a person you love is suffering from depression? There are certain items that you need to be on the outlook for, one of these is the fact that you feel down all the time. In addition if you have lost interest in your favorite activity, when you may be suffering from depression.

The exact causes of depression remain a mystery. We do know that it has a lot to do with a chemical imbalance in the brain concerning a hormone family called MAOI's. These chemicals are very delicately balanced and when one or more of them go out of balance then the condition of depression can occur. Many times the body is able to eventually adjust this balance on its own and a person will rise out of their depression. This is called mild depression. Other times when a person is suffering from deep or "clinical" depression, the body is not able to adjust and therefore the condition goes unchecked or in some cases gets worse.

The odd thing about depression is that sometimes it can go away as quickly as it arrives, while this is the rare case and proper treatment is always preferred. There are several ways that you can treat depression, some of these are medical while others are more natural.

Antidepressants are one of the most effective ways that a person can get their depression under control. These drugs are designed to provide a more moderate balance to the MAOI activity in the brain and are prescribed but mild to moderate cases of depression. Since these drugs are relatively new to medical science and everyone reacts to them and their depression differently the prescribing is not an exact science and you have to be very careful of the potential side effects that they can have.

Exercise is a method that is used in the treatment of a person's depression. A person who exercises on a regular basis is proven to have a lower amount of depression as the chemicals have a better chance of becoming balanced. Many doctors will first try putting a person on an exercise program before prescribing any medication.

Counseling is a major factor in dealing with depression. In this case you are looking for the underlying cause of the emotional and chemical imbalance that has led to the depression condition in the person. Once this cause is addressed the person can start moving back into the world or normal living again.

It doesn't matter what the base cause of the depression is you can get through this and get back to a normal life. There are many more methods that can be listed here that you can use to get to a point where you are in control of your depression and not that your depression is in control of you.
