The Need For A Clear Health And Safety Policy

By Marissa Duncan

From the start of the age of industry, the push to build industry in our society has been great. Every significant world city has numerous areas and districts that house this industry in the form of factories and/or shops. Therefore, the need for health/safety has become an issue of basic, necessary concern to experts and companies as well as government agencies the world over.

These concerns of safety/health are not restricted to industrial areas alone. Every job and opportunity is influenced. This includes educational institutions, eateries, medical complexes, automotive repair shops, fabrication centers, and farms, to name a few. This has created a requirement for the institution of comprehensive policies so the working atmosphere is safe overall, work related sicknesses are reduced and injuries or accidents are eliminated.

Workers may be in the presence of hazardous situations during their daily work performance. The hazards may include loud sounds that could negatively affect the hearing or close contact with dangerous materials which might cause other health problems. Tripping hazards such as oil spills or slick floor surfaces, can cause a worker to suffer a fall related injury.

The focus is to bring down the number of incidents in the workplace as well as center on the worker's personal safety. A complete health/safety program would include start up and continuous maintenance. The offices of certain governmental agencies can aid and assure that compliance is 100% across the board; this encompasses all current laws and rules that apply.

To aid compliance with the labor laws, employers need to appoint knowledgeable staffs who are well-versed with OSH policy to oversee activities at various levels of the organization and to ensure OSH regulations are complied with to the letter. There is also a great need to undertake health and safety training of employees on OSH matters. Training of employees is a preventative measure and greatly reduces the incidence of work place injury and illness. Employees should easily access educational materials and other information related to workplace safety. A copy of the labor laws, notices and information on current developments relating to health and safety should also be availed to them.

Work force training is seen as a required preventive measure. Work related injuries and sicknesses are significantly reduced. The employee should have ready access to materials and safety/health information as it relates to their work area. All labor regulations, notifications and upcoming developments need to be available as well.

Monitoring will prove to be vital in terms of any health and safety policy. The local labor office will need to ensure that all OSHA requirements are being met. This also helps to prevent contravening these regulations. Because of this an occasional audit must be done to ensure all evidence is there that a company is complying. Areas reviewed will include statistical figures, frequency of injury. In addition, there will be a review of equipment provided and degree of training, while providing all prevalent information to your employees.

All employers have a duty to make sure that they have a healthy and safety policy in place. It should create a healthy work environment and reduce the probability of illness and/or injury.
