Medicine: Helping To Heal People

Medicine is both a science and also an art that deals with healing a human being. It is an involvement in which different kinds of health care practices that have changed over time and which deal with providing improved treatment and helping to prevent different illnesses. For a long time, it meant using certain practices that originated in the East. However, after it became the subject of scientific studies its shape and form changed and this change took place mainly in the Western world.

Pharmacy compounding is the art of mixing drugs by a professional that is called a compounding pharmacist whose job is to mix drugs in a manner that suits the needs of his patient. Such a step has to be taken to change a medication from solid to a liquid form and also to take out certain ingredients that would otherwise give rise to allergic reactions.

BHRT or Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is a form of therapy in which hormones are used and which have the same endogenous hormones. It is also a term that refers to pharmacy compounding and blood/saliva testing as well as involves reaching a particular level of hormones (as established through blood/saliva testing) in the human body.

Medicine has a very long and interesting history that dates back to prehistoric times when herbalism in particular was practiced and which involved use of animal parts as well as minerals to treat a patient. Sometimes, the materials that were being used in the treatment of patients were the same as were used in rituals which shamans and medicine men and even priests practiced.

The earliest recorded instances of use of medicines show that it was in ancient Egypt and in Babylonia and in India that such practices were first used. Classical Chinese medicinal uses as too ancient Greek medications and Roman medicinal practices also go back a long way in time. Imhotep from about third Millennium BC is believed to be the first physician.

Sri Lanka had the first real hospital where patients came to be treated. Sushruta was an Indian surgeon and probably the first to practice his art. He is believed to be the first person to have performed a kind of plastic surgery.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, laid the basis for later medicinal approaches. His Hippocrates Oath has survived the test of time and is used even in these modern times. He gave the world new words and categorized illnesses according to their level of severity. He gave us terms such as relapse and he also gave us terms such as crisis, paroxysm and exacerbation. Illnesses were categorized as being epidemic, acute, endemic or chronic.

It was a physician from Greece that had the honor of being the first to perform a surgery. Galen, as he was called, performed some truly revolutionary surgeries including those that treated the brain and even the eyes.

Science has played a major role in how we treat and heal ourselves and so medicinal practices today are much more complex than the basic practices that were known to man in the very earliest days of our civilizations.
