Sleeping Should Not Be Annoying To Your Relationship - How To Combat Sleep Apnea

By Grant Baldwin

You probably know already snoring is detrimental to your relationship, but did you know that sleep apnea also destroys it? Sleep apnea is a condition when when stops breathing for a few seconds or minutes during sleeping then awakens all of a sudden to catch his breath. The sufferer isn't the only one who feels restless at night, his partner also gets disturbed in her sleep.

While you are not conscious of it because you are asleep when it occurs, your wife is. This is what occurs at night: you rouse with a start just long enough for you to return to your normal breathing, but in that process, you have also roused your mate. While you can return to your sleep without any real cognition that you have been disturbed, it will take a while for your wife to go back to sleep.

And that produces strain and tension in the morning... for both of you.

Most people wrongly assume that sleep apnea is more irritating than dangerous. Sleep apnea is a very serious life threatening condition. It raises the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart diseases. So the issues here are not limited to you and your wife's lack of sleep and how it hurts your relationship, your life is also at risk.

The best advice you can take is to consult a doctor, one that focuses on Ear-Nose-Throat. Why? Because sleep apnea, just like snoring, has to do with the tongue and the throat. While snoring is a partial blockage of the airway by your tongue, sleep apnea is the complete obstruction. It momentarily stops the air from moving, stopping you from breathing normally.

Your weight counts in sleep apnea. Although there are those who have sleep apnea have normal Body Mass Index, most sufferers from the condition are heavy. Therefore, don't just cut down the usual bad-for-you suspects (smoking, drinking, stress, etc.), also shed off some weight.

Some sufferers use CPAP machines to help them rid of the irritating thing. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP, is a mask that one puts on during sleeping. Its machine creates a positive pressure of air on the airway, hence, forbidding it from shutting off.

If you have sleep apnea, don't wait for it to cure on its own. Go to a specialist right away. Because if you suffer from it, you don't only have sleep disturbance to worry about, you are also putting your own health and your relationship at risk.
