By Susan Carr

According to the World Health Organization, there are about 235 million asthma sufferers worldwide and it is most prevalent among children. It affects many people in all countries although mortality most often occurs in low and lower-middle income countries mostly due to poor health access. The disease is a health problem but it is treatable. But it can still become a burden for many sufferers all over the globe.

Asthma is a medical condition where the air passages are inflamed which leads to wheezing and shortness of breath. There is no exact cause for this disease but many medical experts speculate that genetics and the environment could predispose one to asthma. But most often than not, asthma attacks are triggered by pollen, animal dander dust and even emotional stress and exercise.

As mentioned before, asthma is treatable. Drugs are the frontline mode of cure for it most specifically inhalers. This hand held device basically sprays medicine (known to the medical world as bronchodilators) into the airway passages, instantly reducing inflammation and promoting relief. Another is the use of a nebulizer where in it turns the medicine into fine mist and the patient just simply inhales it and causing the re-opening of the airway. Medication is very important in treating asthma but lifestyle changes and vigilance is also important in the prevention of an asthma attack.

Prevention is better than cure and for asthmatics, preventing it is the best way in countering the disease. First preventive measure is modifying the environment namely by avoiding allergens that cause the attack. Always have a clean surrounding be it at home or at the workplace. Then think of buying a standalone air purifier to help clean the air. This nifty device is also beneficial at night when you are sleeping.

Lifestyle changes are also important in preventing asthma and having a good bill of health too. First, avoid smoking and smokers because not only can smoke trigger attacks it is also a breeding ground for a host of illnesses like heart disease. Another is doing regular moderate exercise to help strengthen your lungs but work with your doctor to find the right exercises for you. Thirdly, watch what you eat. Aside from food allergens, being overweight can worsen the symptoms of asthma and can also be bad for general health. Lastly, try to avoid emotional and physical stress. Find time to relax and unwind and try to control your emotions when faced with bad omens.

Asthma should not be a hindrance in your life. It may cause problems but knowing what to do can help you in preventing an asthma attack. It's all about attitude, vigilance and knowledge.
