In Ozark gymnastics is a type of sport, which involves performing exercises which require physical strength, coordination, agility, flexibility, balance, power, and courage. The term gymnastics traces its origin from Greek word gymnos which translates to naked whereas gymnazo means training when naked. There are numerous other Greek terms that are related to these two and also have close meanings. The exercise was known by that term since people during that time exercised naked.

Internationally, this exercise is coordinated by an international body. Every state has a governing body that is affiliated to the international body. People who perform the exercises are referred to as gymnasts. The discipline has many branches and the gymnasts have the liberty to specialize in whichever branch they want. The major branches are trampolining, team gym, artistic tumbling, rhythmic, acrobatic, and aerobic gymnastics.

Competitors in the competitive branch of the sport may vary in age from 20 months old kids. Other age groups and classes include competitive, world class, recreational exercise, and children group. The degree of skills among participants varies with each class. Events are categorized into those for kids, women, and men.

Major women events include vault, floor exercise, uneven bars, and balance beam. Men activities include vault, high bar, parallel bars, still rings, floor exercise, and pommel horse. The exercises may take a short period but they are very exhausting requiring endurance, flexibility, and strength. These exercise evolved from activities done by ancient Greeks and circus performance skill. Greek exercise include skills used to mount and dismount horses.

Scoring in both women and men events is found from deductions taken from the start values. The start values are calculated basing on levels of difficulty of various elements gymnasts try out and whether they meet the composition requirements or not. Composition requirement varies with the type of event one tries out. This value is known as D score.

Deductions in executions and artistry are subtracted from a value of 10.0. In this case, the value 10.0 is called an E score. The final scores are got by adding together deductions from E scores to D scores. Since 2007, there have been changes in the methods used to calculate final scores. Since then, bonuses are added to executions when calculating the final scores.

In aerial routines or any kind of tumbling, the final phase is the landing. Landing comes after take off and flight. Landing is a vital skill in terms of execution in injury occurrence, general performance, and competition score. If one does not use enough energy, the possibility of sustaining injuries increases. Injuries mainly occur in the lower extremities. Major injuries include bone bruises or fractures, ligament tears, and cartilage lesions. The gymnast must use proper techniques to avoid injuries and score highly.

The final contact on the ground must be made safely, gracefully, and properly in a double-foot landing style. Successful landing is termed as soft. This occurs when the hip joint and the knee of both feet are at an angle of flexion of over 63 degrees.
