A Simple System Of Skin Care

By Brad Clark

We all know the importance of 'personal skin care'. The opinion on how to best care for your skin differs from person to person. Some people believe that going to beauty parlors every other day is personal skin care. Others believe that personal skin care is just a matter of applying some cream or lotion on your skin, every now and then. Then there are people who think that personal skin care is an event that happens once a month or once a year. Still others busy themselves with 'personal skin care' all the time. However, personal skin care is not that complicated and neither is it that expensive (considering how beneficial it is). Personal skin care is following a routine or a procedure for attending to the needs of your skin.

Sooner than starting this pattern, you should determine what skin-type you have (oily, dry, sensitive, normal etc.) and find and experiment with skin care products that work best with your skin-type. For people with normal skin, here is a pattern that should prove beneficial.

First things first: 'Cleansing'. The core ingredients of a cleanser are oil, water and surfactants (wetting agents). Oil and surfactants pull dirt and oil from your skin and pores, allowing the water to flush it away, hence, cleansing your skin. You might need to experiment with several brands before finding on that works the best. However, you avoid any cleansers with soap. To avoid damaging your skin, use lukewarm water and don't overuse cleansers.

Next up: Exfoliation. Your skin automatically sheds dead cells and replaces them with fresh, living cells. To exfoliate means to help your skin remove those useless, dead cells. Dead cells obviously cannot make any meaningful use of skin-care products, but still consume them, stealing away what could be benefiting healthy cell. Hence, for your skin to get the most out of your skin care routine, you should get rid of those dead skin cells. In general, you should exfoliate directly after cleansing. How much exfoliation is necessary is important information. If you have dry or oily skin, four or five times a week should suffice. Only one or two times a week for dry, sensitive skin. More will be needed if you live in an area with high heat and humidity.

Next thing on personal skin care routine is moisturizers. This is one of the most important things in personal skin care. Even people with oily skin need moisturizers. Moisturizers not only seal the moisture in your skin cells, but also attract moisture (from air) whenever needed. Use of too much moisturizer can however clog skin pores and end up harming your skin. The amount of moisturizer needed by your skin will become apparent to you within one week of you using the moisturizer. Also, applying the moisturizer is best when your skin is still damp.

4th and finally: sunscreen. Lots of moisturizers (day-time creams/moisturizers) have UV defense included in their ingredients. Whether cloudy or sunny, these types of products are always a good bet.

Again, experiment with various personal skin care products and also with the amount you need to apply. What gives you best results is the best personal skin care recipe for you. However, if you have some kind of skin dilemma, it is best to consult your dermatologist before you actually start using any personal skin care products.
