Recognizing And Dealing With Adjustment Disorder

By Lee Larossier

When you suffer a very stressful event in your life it can cause many problems and some people develop adjustment disorder as a result. The suddenness of major changes can make life almost unbearable. Although most people eventually adjust, some just cannot seem to get over the problem. Here are some common causes and symptoms, and strategies for therapy.

Death is one of the hardest things that most people face in life. When someone close is taken from you they can never return. Some individuals experience a shock that seems impossible to recover from. If you lose someone that is of major importance to you, coping without them may seem meaningless. The difficulties of a death can be far reaching.

One of the most stressful things one can endure is divorce and separation. Your life can suddenly be changed forever and this affects your children more than you may realize. Some kids do not want to accept the fact that the two most important people in their lives are no longer together.

Symptoms of adjustment disorder include depression and a feeling of hopelessness. In children it can cause sudden defiant behavior that is not normally seen. One may experience a lot of tension and anxiety and this can lead to panic attacks with related symptoms.

When one seeks treatment it is usually to relieve the immediate problem like stress, anxiety, or tension. Often times, medication will help. Yet, one cannot get better unless the inner problems are addressed and this can be helped with cognitive therapy behavior.

If you or a family member is suffering with adjustment disorder you may need to seek professional help. Prognosis is very good and most people show improvement after treatment. Many people do well with long term therapy and also with self help groups. In some cases, the entire family may need to attend therapy sessions to help the patient cope with life changes.
