In Chinese medicine theory, back pain can be caused by a kidney energy weakness. This is not the actual organ, but the energy of the organ as defined by Chinese medicine theory. Chinese herbs and acupuncture can be very helpful to relieve back pain.
Often, low back pain is caused by muscle spasms. Your back gets very tight and acupuncture relaxes the muscles to make the pain go away. There are acupuncture points on the low back that relax your para-spinous muscles.
There are several meridians that affect the circulation of the back. When you improve circulation on these meridians, your back pain can be relieved. You can also use points on the kidney meridian, which goes through the ankle to relieve pain in your back. If your muscles are very tight, you might need to get acupuncture directly on your back muscles. You often feel better the day after your first acupuncture session. You usually need to get several acupuncture treatments for complete relief.
I also like to treat the "jiaji" points. These points are about an inch from the spine and open up circulation in your back. If you have an underlying kidney deficiency, which is common, I use moxa spray. Moxibustion is an herb called Mugwort. This herb is rolled into a cigar shape and lit. It can be passed over the back to help heat it up and treat your kidney energy.
The smoke from moxibustion can cause allergies in some people. Often, acupuncturists become allergic to the smoke from using it so much and turn to moxa spray. The moxa spray has the same herbs as the regular moxa. The moxa spray is sprayed on the back and a far infrared heat lamp is used.
It takes about a month to treat a kidney deficiency. I also recommend cordyceps as well as other Chinese herbal tonics to improve energy levels.
Mugwort is lit and held over the skin. Smokeless moxa is mugwort that has been processed to reduce the smoke level. It still makes fumes though. If you go to an acupuncturist and smell something odd, do not be surprised if he/she is using mugwort in the office.
