How To Determine Which Low Carb Foods Contain Fiber

By Josh King

Many foods that contain high amounts of fiber are high in carbohydrates. At the same time, soluble and insoluble fiber are essential for digestive health and bowel movements. Fiber helps maintain healthy weight and regulates cholesterol levels.

Flaxseeds are one low-carb, high-fiber option for people on a low carb diet. Whole or ground flaxseeds can be added to salads, main dishes, cereal, and casseroles. Flaxseeds contain omega-3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients and have a nutty, mellow flavor. Wheat bran is a good high-fiber option to include in a low carb diet. Wheat bran has vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, and half a cup contains 6 grams fiber and 3 grams carbohydrates .

Vegetables and fruit, nut, and cereal are other healthy food options. Eat leafy greens and vegetables such artichoke, broccoli, and peas that are low in carbs and high in fiber. One cup of broccoli, for example, has 2 g carbs and 6 g fiber. A medium artichoke has 10 grams fiber and 13 grams carbohydrates. Nut butter and nuts are low in carbohydrates and add fiber to your diet. There are 3.5 grams fiber and 4 grams carbohydrates in 2 tablespoons of almonds, and pistachios and pecans have roughly the same amount.

You can eat high-fiber cereal several times a week. Bran cereal has 10 grams fiber and 23 grams carbs (per cup). Low-sugar fruits such as raspberries, papaya, and peaches and non-starchy vegetables are high in nutrients and fiber. Non-starchy vegetables such as radicchio, hearty greens, and greens (chard, spinach) are low in carbohydrates. Chia seeds are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates, and there are many low-carb recipes with chia. You can prepare Chia pudding by mixing chocolate, whole chia seeds, and sugar-free coffee syrup. Mix all ingredients in a small bowl and let it sit for ten minutes. Chill for 30 minutes after whisking until smooth. You can also make hot chia cereal, hot chocolate chia cereal, cinnamon chia pudding cake, or frosted chia brownies.

Mustard greens, chicory, and endive are also low in carbs and high in fiber. Other vegetables contain equal amounts of usable carbohydrates and fiber. One cup of raw eggplant, for example, contains 2 g fiber and 3 g carbohydrates. One cup of cooked, cubed eggplant contains 3 grams fiber and 5 g carbohydrates. Other vegetables with similar amounts are radish, asparagus, mushrooms, celery, and lettuce. Some vegetables are high in carbohydrates and fiber. Such vegetables are snow peas, zucchini, bell peppers, and cabbage. Fruits contain fiber as well, but it is recommended to choose low-sugar fruits. Some fruits are very high in sugar, including pomegranates, figs, and tangerines. Rhubarb, on the other hand, contains only 1 gram carbohydrates, 13 calories, and 1 gram fiber ( -cup serving).
