Assembling Or Purchasing A 3 Day Survival Kit

By Stacey Burt

No one knows what the future may bring and it is always best to be well-prepared. That is why assembling or purchasing a 3 day survival kit is so important. In an emergency, it is the first three twenty-four hour periods that are the most critical so it is best to be ready for whatever life aims your way.

There are so many events that can constitute an emergency that may require such preparation. It could be a tornado, hurricane, nuclear bomb, enemy attack, or one of several other scenarios. No matter what the case, being prepared with essential supplies may save the lives of you and all of your family members.

This supply must include several critical items to get you through this first time period. It sometimes takes days for emergency resources to converge and get critical supplies to the areas affected. By having your own store of items, you will be well-prepared to take on much more than others. The basic items one needs include food, water, first-aid supplies, communication devices, shelter, warmth and food prep equipment.

There are many companies that sell prepared sets of prep items for any type of emergency. They can be pricey but they do last for long periods of time and are very convenient. If you do not have these funds in your budget, select a variety of canned and dried foods that fit your needs and those of your family members. These can include powdered milk and drinks, canned fruits and vegetables, dried meats and fruits, and staples such as crackers and cereals. Always have jugs or containers of water on hand. Simply fill them and place them where they will be easily accessible. Keeping containers of water in your freezer will also help your frozen foods stay cold for several hours if the power goes off.

A good first aid box should include pain relief tablets, thermometer, band aids, gauze, rubbing alcohol and peroxide, tape, and scissors. Communication equipment should include a radio that can be operated by batteries or solar energy, two-way radios for communication between family members and extra cell phones with battery-powered chargers. Don't forget to stock up on those batteries.

Other items needed will include flashlights, matches, lighters, a hammer or hatchet, and a manual can opener. Sanitation items, soap, and baby and pet supplies may also be needed depending on your family dynamics. Always include contact information for other family members, personal documents such as drivers licenses, birth certificates and social security cards, and maps of the surrounding areas.

Shelter will depend on the type of emergency. If you are able to stay in your own home, this may not be a priority but if your home is destroyed, it will be much more of an issue. You may need to have a tent on hand that will house your entire family. If this is not feasible, stock up on several large tarps, stakes and rope. Sleeping bags are the best choice but a variety of large, warm blankets will also do. Prepper companies also offer blankets made of Mylar which will assist in keeping the heat in.

It is always best to be ready and prepared in the case of an emergency. It can make the difference between life and death. Begin immediately by purchasing and assembling these articles and other items that are essential to your family's health and safety.
