There are 5 major popular diets that are sweeping the world. Each year, women and men across the country make resolutions to lose weight and increase their fitness levels. However, these days there are so many diets from which to choose that many are left confused and unsure which diets are healthy and which will help them lose the most weight. Here is a quick look at 5 current diet fads.

The Atkins Diet is typically thought of as the plan which encourages high consumption of proteins with very little carbohydrates. This helps to keep insulin levels in the blood stream controlled. Carbohydrates cause insulin to rise and fall rapidly which hinders the body's burning of fat stores.

Weight Watchers, on the other hand, is a household name program which is favored by many for decades now. This program is also experiencing rekindling of interest among dieters. The main feature of such program is providing you with a large support group of dieters involved in the same program though it also include dieting and exercise. Weight Watchers is now chiefly done through the Internet.

The Zone makes it also in the list. Such diet fad mainly focuses on strictly controlling the insulin levels. But unlike Atkins Program, it does not limit the consumption of carbohydrates. It recognizes the benefit of unrefined carbohydrates, healthy fats and oils like olive oil in ones diet.

The South Beach Diet was created by a cardiologist in the '90s who was unhappy with the meal recommendations of the American Heart Association. The AHA pushes for an extremely low amount of fats but makes up for the calories with extreme amounts of carbohydrates. The South Beach Diet focuses on correcting this area and provides meal plans that are low in refined carbohydrates but still include a moderate amount of healthy fats.

Raw Food Diet is the most recent among the five popular diets. As the term suggest, such diet make unprocessed and uncooked foods the major part in ones diet. The plan recommends that your daily food intake should consist of 75 percent uncooked and favorably organic sources. Due to these requirements in this diet, people who usually follow are vegetarians who do not eat animal products or vegans who do not eat animal products and byproducts. Sticking to this plan gets rid of high amounts of saturated fat content.

Each of the said diets comes with advantages and drawbacks. Many dieters have testified of its effectiveness in making them lose weight but there are still oppositions who said that such diets do not stick with a balanced diet plan. Basically, you just need to do your research first before starting on any of these popular diets to make sure that it is a healthy move and improve your fitness.
