Humidifier Benefits To Your Home

By Matthew Jones

When the temperatures drop outdoors we typically react by making sure a new, clean filter is in our furnace and then on it goes. The AC portion of our utility bill is replaced with gas or electric heat charges. We also find ourselves staying indoors more often and here is where the problems start. The main problem being air that is too dry for our bodies to tolerate.

We seek warmth and comfort in our homes by cranking up the heat and sealing the windows, yet it is this very same thing that create an overly-dry living environment and thus internal and external issues arise. Congestion from colds and itchy dry skin leave us counting the days until we can open the windows and turn down that thermostat.

A solution often used to alleviate the symptoms that come with this weather are humidifiers. Most of our forced air units dry out the air in our home to levels that are unfriendly to the body. Mobile humidifiers are popular because of their flexibility. They can be easily moved to the area's in your home where they are most necessary. During this time of year they usually find their way into the bedroom of a child or elderly person, or even yourself.

A humidifier benefits the air quality in your home by balancing the dry air with moisture that is produced and emitted into the room, thereby creating a balance of dry and moist air. You want to maintain a humidity level of roughly 45% inside your house. We need the heat that is produced by our units, but without the production of humidity the warmth you experience comes at a price to the well being of our families.

When we ignore the warning signs from our bodies we open the door to more serious infection and uncomfortable skin related problems. Even your home itself is adversely affected by the dryness in the air. Wall paint, hardwood flooring, wood-based furniture and more are all impacted by non-moisturized air. Humidifiers benefit 'everything' by adding healthy humidity percentages to your air, as well as reducing your utility bill in the process.

Bringing in the benefits of a humidifier to your living environment is extremely important during the hibernating times of the year. Too little humidity and you are exposed to the issues mentioned earlier. Too much humidity and you're air will feel warm, but overly wet and therefore uncomfortable. You'll want to monitor these levels and keep the amount of humidity inside your home comfortable and beneficial to your health.

Our internal cooling system can have difficulty with unbalanced humidity levels, both low and high. This is why we struggle on a hot humid day outside. The sweat has difficulty evaporating off our bodies. On the other hand, inside dry air has a 'pruning' effect on our skin and worsens congestion and breathing. It never feels as warm as it should feel either.

Therefore, proper humidification in the home is crucial to stay warm, without the negative health effects caused by the shortage of humidity. Introduce a high quality humidifier into your house and solve this problem, while at the same time lowering your utilities as an extra benefit.
