Insomnia and its Leading Causes

By Erin Song

Insomnia is a fairly common condition but that is little comfort to those who are plagued by it. There are many side effects from this lack of sleep that impact people both emotionally and physically. Keep reading to learn about various reasons people suffer from insomnia. Something as simple as recording what you do every day for a week can be instrumental in helping you identify the causes of your own insomnia.

One prominent culprit is a lack of daily exercise. If you aren't getting enough exercise during the day you might have trouble getting your body relax for sleep at night. When you don't get enough daily exercise you may experience huge consequences for your overall health that go beyond sleepless nights. The first place you might want to start making changes if you suffer from insomnia is in your daily activity amounts. All you need to do, for the most part, is add a few extra minutes to your day where you're up and moving around.

For people who don't have a hard time falling asleep but still feel tired all the time, sleep apnea may be at fault. People who suffer from this condition wake up many times during the night. Apnea can be blamed one of two different physiological events. The final result is that you aren't able to breathe correctly while asleep. You'll have to go through a proper "sleep study" before you can actually be diagnosed as having sleep apnea. Sleep apnea sufferers commonly complain of feeling sleepy all the time, frequent headaches, and even loud snoring - or rather their partners do. The good news is that this is a condition that is entirely treatable. Treatment is necessary though because your body is being robbed of vital oxygen as a result of this condition.

It is entirely possible for your work schedule to cause insomnia. This is quite true among people who work night shifts and then have a great deal of difficulty sleeping during daylight hours. All people have some sort of natural rhythm where it is easier for them to fall asleep. You're more likely to have trouble sleeping when your job or studies interfere with the sleep hours that work best for you. It is possible to retain your body so that you can work the hours you need to work but that doesn't mean it's easy. You just have to figure out if your prime time for sleeping is at night (as is the case with the vast majority of the population) or during the day.

Knowing the cause of your insomnia is the first step towards getting the help you need to get a good night's sleep. Proper amounts of sleep is very important which means you can't afford to ignore insomnia at all. Keep looking to find the culprit in your cause if one of these is not the cause of your insomnia. You can't hope to fix the problem of insomnia until you know what's really causing it.
