Benefits Of Central Jersey Gymnastics

By Adela Beasley

Many children are having fun and keeping fit with Central Jersey gymnastics. This sport has its roots in ancient Greece and has been popular for generations. Both boys and girls can participate and there are specific competition events for them. Gyms throughout the state cater to kids at every level.

Going to a gym several times a week is one of the best ways to keep in shape. It takes a tremendous amount of physical strength to perform the vaults, tumbles and flips that are an every day part of a gymnastics routine. Many enthusiastic youngsters train for many hours each week. This is the type of dedication that is needed to reach a competitive level.

The sport requires a lot of dedication and hard work. Most programs are at least twice a week, whilst those in competition may need to train six days each week. Some children get up early to go to the gym before school. Others attend training sessions in the evening for several hours. It is a great way to learn about commitment and also make some new friends.

The uneven bars are another piece of equipment that requires a lot of confidence. A set of move are made that take the gymnast over, under and between the bars. Timing must be perfect or the athlete will fall. During competitions when the tension is high, it is very difficult to keep a clear head and execute a perfect routine. Even the most experienced competitor can make mistakes and mistime a move.

For some children lessons begin very early. This can be as young as two years old, although most are probably around the age of five or six. Even though the sport is most popular with girls, many boys are drawn to the activity and excitement of learning the exercises on the bars and pommel horse. Most children begin by learning the basics, such as tumbling, flips and vaults. These form the basis of the later more complex routines.

Landings are probably the most important part of every move. They score the most points and must be executed with perfection. Both feet must land together and the gymnast should not take a step forward or back. It takes years of training to get the technique just right. The body must rotate at the correct speed and the ankles must be flexed at just the right angle. Getting all of these factors just right is very difficult.

A good coach should really focus on getting the best out of every child. Some people will be more dedicated than others. Everyone should be made to feel equally welcome, weather or not they chose to compete.

There are many excellent Central Jersey gymnastics facilities to choose from. Some are more focused on competition than others. It is a good idea to look at several different gyms to find the right one. Asking friends for a recommendation is also a good idea. Attending a program gives children the opportunity to learn a great new sport and at the same time get a lot of valuable exercise.
