By Kathy Roberts

The vast majority of people experience Acne Vulgaris (or acne, for short) during their lifetime. This common skin disease includes many types of blemishes, such as the common blackheads or whiteheads, as well as deeper, more serious pimples and cysts. The causes of adult acne are not very well understood, but it is important to be informed about acne health.

The most painful and severe acne is in the form of nodules and cysts. They are much larger and deeper than the other pimples, and can be very painful. People who experience this condition can be affected in many ways. Not only they can be physically scarring, they can also leave deep emotional scars behind. It can be hard to find effective treatment for severe acne. There are several types of acute acne, and they include Acne Conglobata, Acne Fulminans, Gram-Negative Folliculitis, and Pyoderma Faciale.

Types of Severe Acne Vulgaris

The most severe form of acne is called Acne Conglobata. This form of acne is characterized by deep, sometimes painful nodules in the skin. Sometimes larger nodules are formed from the interconnecting nodules under the skin. It can be very difficult to get rid of this kind of acne, and it can cause permanent scar tissue. In order to reduce scarring and treat Acne Conglobata, aggressive acne scar treatment is necessary.

One other type of severe acne is called Acne Fulminans. It can cause nodule-like blemishes and whiteheads. But the distinguishing factor of Acne Fulminans is that it can be accompanied by fever and pain in the muscles or joints. You must use an effective acne treatment cream to get rid of this type of acne.

Gram-negative folliculitis is a acne inflammation caused by a bacterial infection. Using antibiotics over a period of time can cause this bacterial infection. Usually, this is a result of patients who have used antibiotics to get rid of acne. Gram-negative folliculitis can be very hard to treat because of its resistance to antibiotics.

The last type of acne vulgaris is called Pyoderma faciale. It only affects women, and even for those who have never had acne before, it can appear suddenly and be very severe. Those affected get a very red face, similar to rosacea symptoms, and so this acne is sometimes called rosacea fulminans. Although this acne only stays for a year or so, it can do a lot of damage and cause scarring.
