A Common Cause Of Lower Back Pain.

By Doug Tan

Common causes for lower back pain are narrowing of the spinal canal, spinal stenosis and slipped disc. It may also be caused due to any injury or accident to the back. Slipped disc is probably the most frequent and the most troublesome of all these.

Discs are plate like structures that are responsible to support the movement of vertebrae and are located in between the vertebrae. If the slip occurs then the spinal canal narrowing results. Muscle spasm of inflammation follows suit and worsens the condition even more. When you stand in a wrong position, the back bears the pressure. So, you must be careful to maintain the best posture as far as humanly possible.

More common causes include strains and sprains. People often get confused by these terms. Sprain occurs when tearing of muscles is involved whereas strain is overstretching of tendons, muscles or ligaments. Still, lots of doctos and medical dictionaries have different explanation for these terms.

Two major type of strains are chronic and acute strains. Chronic strains may result due to overuse of muscles and acute strains may result due to injury. When a forceful or sudden movement twists the ligaments then sprains occur. If the muscles are stiff due to overuse, it's a signal that something is wrong. Ligaments are more susceptible as they are not flexible as tendons and muscles.

Strains and sprains can be divided into three categories. They are Grade I, Grade II & Grade III. Grade I strains are mild ones. They happen because of slightly pulled muscles. Grade II strains are moderate ones which results due to tear of fibers in muscles. Grade III strains are severe and are caused due to rupture of muscles. Where as, Grade I sprains are caused due to tearing of some ligaments.

You need to adopt certain techniques to lower the risk of back pain. Proper sitting, standing and sleeping posture, exercising on a regular basis are some of these techniques.
