Parenting 101: Allergy Management For School-Age Children

By Ping Boone

Allergy happens in many little school-age kids. Up to 30% of children have symptoms of nasal allergic reaction, including runny nose, crusty and stuffy nose, exhausting sneezing, and itchiness. The cause of allergies in children can be house dust mite or food.

Allergy also manifests in persistent and exhausting coughing that can last up to two weeks. In some cases, the allergic attack can occur at nighttime, with the child's sleep being distressed by persistent, irritating and exhausting coughs, accompanied with choking and vomiting. This type of allergic manifestation is both tough for the kid and for the parents. Because the child misses sleep, she finds it hard to arouse up in the morning, thereby affecting her school performance, her mood, and setting her physical activity. With the child being cranky, parents are more prone to being cranky and losing their patience over the child's demands.

The impact of allergy is more than physical. It is also an emotional and social struggle for both parent and child. With the child having more demands than before when the allergy was not occurring, parents have set time to rest and relax. The child, on the other hand, has limited physical activities, too, and this can impact on her social development.

To better deal with the allergy of one's kid, parents are advised to seek help from professionals, like eyes, ears, nose and throat doctors who can help them deal with the allergic reaction. Doctors may advise removal of the potential source of allergens and other medications, like antihistamines, nasal sprays, nebulisation, among others.

It is recommended for parents to take away the cause of allergens at home. Keeping the dust off will also keep the dust mites out. Letting more air to circle a wet room will lessen the possibility of virus and other microorganisms to multiply, but be sure the kid may not be susceptible to pollen as allergens. Airconditioning is great for as long as the indoor air quality is good.

Doctors can facilitate parents in winning with management their child's allergic reaction. In worse cases where an allergic reaction results to asthma, parents should right away take the kid to a paediatrician.
