Tips To Stop Smoking

By Dr Kevin Johnston

Most smokers are keen on quitting the disgusting habit for good. But the feeling of quitting can quickly elude a smoker who is addicted. We often like to ignore things that are distressing or hard to do. But that is understandable, to a degree, for smokers because nicotine has been said to be more addictive than crack cocaine. This doesn't even begin to take into account the many chemicals that are added to cigarettes to make them extremely addictive. But smokers have many products and techniques they can use to kick the habit for good. We now know so much about cigarette addiction that there is no loss of products and methods out there.

Plan your smoking experience carefully and give yourself a concrete date when you will become a non-smoker. It's recommended by many to make a big event out of quitting. When your quitting smoking is made into a big event, you will finally get what you need to throw out your cigarettes forever. A quit date is also good because that will give you plenty of time to plan. Your doctor is also someone you should consult, as your doctor may be able to educate you on the latest advancements in smoking cessation. You need to become surrounded by people who are going to support you all the way. Every method you employ to help you stop smoking is getting you one step closer to your goal. Make sure you create a good plan, set a date to quit, and then set your plan in motion so that you can start on your journey to quit.

A large part of smoking consists of the physical habit of doing something with your hands. For many, driving is very conducive to doing something with your hands such as smoking. So make sure you have a plan to deal with the smoking triggers when you are driving. So try to find something that you can fiddle with that will get rid of this need to hold something. That may sound a bit strange to you, but there is real power in that alternative kind of habitual behavior. Plus, it will keep you from craving cigarettes.

It's important to note that some smoking products work better for some than others. Nobody is the same so this actually makes sense. What works for some people won't work for you in some cases. Often it is very difficult to make predictions regarding these matters. So if you see your doctor, you may want to ask about the various prescription pharmaceuticals available to help you quit smoking. You won't have cravings with these drugs, and you'll also feel great since there won't be the withdrawal symptoms.

If you have a lot of friends and family that can help you, have them support you during this trying time when you are attempting to quit smoking. The non-smokers will be glad you're going through this, and the smokers will surely be jealous. You could also get a friend or family member to quit along with you. This really works because there is mutual support involved.
