By Greg Mortholsan

Owning a dog is a pleasant experience and a gratifying one too. However, the lack of awareness on their health and diseases that plague them can make life miserable for the dog as well as the owner. It does not feel good not knowing what is plaguing your pet and nor does it feel good knowing that something maybe wrong with it. Knowing some common diseases and symptoms that suggest the same is the best way to stay informed about your canine's health.

Among the many diseases that afflict dogs, the most dangerous has got to be rabies. What makes this virus even more deadly is the fact that it not only affects dogs but mammals in general meaning that if your dog gets it then you too may become its victim. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease except death. However, vaccinations prevent the spread of rabies in the event your dog comes in direct contact with infected saliva or is bitten by an infected mammal.

A few canine diseases such as Leptospirosis, Canine Distemper, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus are now no longer a worry. Medical research in the past few decades has come out with shots that take care of all these diseases.

Dogs are susceptible to parasitic infections. Both the external and the internal parasites find it easy jumping to a dog. Moreover, the external lice, ticks, mites and other parasites can be quite difficult to get rid of. Tapeworm, Roundworm, Whipworm and Heartworm are a few internal parasites that are equally dangerous. The problem with parasitic infections is that they do not cause much problems initially but with time dogs start showing signs of weakness, fatigue and anemia. This is why they should be treated properly on the first signs of infection.

Mange although is restricted to dogs, this dangerous parasitic infection that eats away the skin is easily transmittable to humans especially the sarcoptic variant. This is why if your dog shows any signs of Mange that include skin blisters, skin rashes and reddening of joints etc. you should immediately have it diagnosed.

There are a few symptoms that can show a dog in distress for example, loss of body hair and appetite, increased levels of aggression accompanied with a drop in alertness levels, excessive thirst and restlessness, head shaking, foul breath and much more. A few unnoticed signs such as a running nose and foul breath may mean something more than usual. Knowing these signs of discomfort, you can find out when your dog is not doing so well and show it to a vet.
