The Benefits of Vegan Soap

By Jessica Smith

What is veganism?

A vegan is a person who has chosen to refrain from consuming any animal product or biproduct. This includes, but is not limited to the meat from an animal but also things that the animal produces like dairy, honey, or eggs. Most vegans are also very strict when it comes to wearing or using products that contain animal biproducts as well, like clothing, shoes, and cosmetics.

Reasons for veganism

There are many reasons why someone would choose to live this type of lifestyle. However, the most popular reasons include health, ecology, environment, philosophy, religion, diet, and lifestyle.

Why vegan soaps?

In order to be considered a true soap, it must contain both of the following ingredients: The first is lye and the second is fat. This creates an interesting dilemma for the vegan, because most soaps contain animal fat or tallow. Since vegans have chosen to refrain from all animal biproducts, including animal fats, they must use a vegan soap. Luckily, vegan soaps are not hard to find.

What kind of fats do vegan soaps contain?

Vegan soaps usually contain coconut oil and palm oil. Coconut oil is often used for its cleansing, healing, and moisturizing properties. It gently cleanses the skin, heals dry skin, and balances moisture levels. Palm is used for its high vitamin content, namely vitamin E and beta carotene. In fact, it has more beta carotene than a carrot!

Where can vegan soaps be found?

Vegan soaps can be found in local health food stores, farmers markets, and online. Our favorite store is an online store called iVi Scents. This company has moisturizing soaps made from coconut oil and palm oil. The soaps come in a wide variety of scents, colors, and packaging. But best of all they are 100% vegan soaps and cruelty free!
