Spend Less, But Eat Better

By Ida Long

Trying to save money on your groceries? Many people are, but they often end up robbed of important food-derived nutrients by purchasing cheap, processed food. Luckily, with a little know-how and planning, you can feed yourself well and save money at the same time.

Keep the junk food out of your cart by avoiding those tempting aisles and by leaving the kids at home. It is hard enough to tell yourself no without having to say it twenty times to your children.

Restrict your beverages to water. Water is nearly free and is vital to our health. Most Americans are chronically dehydrated so this tactic not only saves you money, it also strengthens your health. Save the milk for meals that require it such as breakfast cereal. Soda should be saved for special occasions only.

Buy fruit in bulk when it is in season. Buying in season mean lower costs because the fruit has not been stored in a refrigerated warehouse. Freeze, can or dry the extra fruit that you do not use and you will have plenty of inexpensive fruit all year round.

Substitute beans for meat in your recipes. This will save lots of money without altering the taste or the nutritional content of the food very much.

Eating more high-protein peanut butter is a great way to save money and keep yourself on track nutritionally. Peanut butter works great in sandwiches either with jelly, honey, bananas or even mayonnaise. Or eat it with a piece of fruit such as a banana, apple, or pear.

Eat a salad with lunch and dinner. Lettuce contains a lot of water which is very filling. When you eat a salad before your main course, it will fill you up very inexpensively.
