5 Fun Swimming Pool Games

By Bill Bridges

A swimming pool can turn a simple backyard to a beautiful paradise. But aside from being a beautiful feature of a house, a pool can also be a place where you can spend time with loved ones. There are many activities that can be done in the swimming pool. In this article, you will learn a few of the many fun games that can be played in the swimming pool.

1. The Marco Polo. This is perhaps one of the most popular games that people play in a swimming pool. There must be two (2) or more people involved in order to play this game. The format is a modified version of hide-and-seek. One player has to be the "it". He closes his eyes or uses a blindfold and waits until a certain count is over. During the count the other players scatter around the pool. When the count is done, the one who is "it" swims around the swimming pool and tries to tag the other players. In this game, he is allowed to locate the other players by crying out, "Marco!", and the others respond by shouting, "Polo!" When the "it" tags another player, that player is subsequently blindfolded and made to catch the others in turn, and so on.

2. Treasure Hunting. This game involves the two groups. Have your players divide into two groups and give each group a list of certain objects to look for. Make sure the objects will sink to the bottom and that there are two of each kind. Note that there shouldn't be any sharp objects included. Strew all the objects around the swimming pool. The fastest group to collect the items listed wins. You can also opt to make the game a little bit more difficult by adding objects in the water that are not part of the list. In this way, if a player collects an unlisted object, he will have to dive back and put the object back in the water.

3. Doughnut Float Race. This is a fairly easy game with simple mechanics. Prepare doughnut floats equivalent to the number of players joining. The players must position themselves at the shallow end of the swimming pool while lying on the floats. When they are given the go signal, they must race to the other end of the pool but they must only use their hands for paddling.

4. The next game is the London Bridge. The game may be played in at the shallow end of the pool or in the deep end, depending on how good your players are at swimming. Two players must hold each other's hands up and the other players must swim under it. When all players have passed through, the "bridge" is lowered. As the game goes, the players will have to swim lower and lower through the "bridge".

5. Colors. This is a modified "tag" type of game. One player has to be the "catcher" and stands at one end of the swimming pool with his back turned towards the rest of the participants. The other players then pick a color, and when everybody has chosen a color, the catcher calls out a color randomly. If a player's color is called out, he has to silently swim to the far side of the pool. If the catcher hears any one swimming, he can turn around and tag the player who's swimming before he can reach the other end of the pool.
