Worldwide Efforts to Stop Environmental Destruction

By Nia Lawrence

History reminds us of the incessant efforts of a lot of people worldwide to advance the welfare and interests of mankind. Those scientific and technological efforts, no doubt, are what make our lives a lot better and more convenient these days. As the population of the human race continues to increase across the globe, studies are ongoing about how to make the most of the world's resources. Specifically, there are efforts to discover alternative sources of energy, such as a natural gas renewable energy source. These efforts are mainly based on the fact that the energy sources used nowadays are non-renewable or irreplaceable. Aside from that, there are scientific predictions that the earth's resources will not be enough to sustain future generations.

Plants and animals lived on earth even before people lived on it. What used to be living millions of years ago are now benefitting humans. The decayed remnants of plants and animals that lived a long time ago are now used as sources of energy. These are called fossil fuels - decayed remains of organic things. The roles of fossil fuels are quite many - they are used in communication, transportation, electricity and so on. However, use of such energy resources also poses environmental risks. Burning down or oxidizing fossil fuels to produce energy emits big, harmful amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These gases, as most people know, are the ones behind many environmental problems such as pollution and global warming.

To solve this problem and to lessen the dependency of the world on fossil fuels, efforts are being made in order to study about alternative energy resources. Renewable gas energy sources are now seen as alternatives to fossil fuels. We all know that fossil fuels take a long time to form. Aside from that, the use of such also raises environmental concerns. The use of renewable or natural gas is said to be relatively safer as the burning process also consists of lower amounts of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen. It is also constantly available. Nowadays, studies are being made to discover how to maximize the use and production of these alternative energy sources. However, just like fossil fuels, the use of natural gas also has its disadvantages - they also emit large amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (a form of harmful greenhouse gas).

One worldwide effort being made to save the earth is planting carbon capture trees. Trees, as we all know, clean the air we breathe and capture carbon dioxide, a form of greenhouse gas. However, this kind of trees is different from ordinary trees. They are scientifically engineered to be more effective in trapping carbon. Tree planting may be an effective way of saving the world from total destruction, but we must not stop here. We can also save the earth through myriads of ways, such as using eco-friendly items and refraining from using products with chlorofluorocarbon or CFC.

The earth has seen (and continues to experience) lots of changes. Most of these changes actually benefit people's lives. However, in the process, another party is also affected - the environment. Each of us is accountable to the world's current environmental situation. Good thing there are now environmental efforts done across the globe that many people participate in, such as tree planting for carbon credits. All of us must contribute to save the earth - be environmentally responsible and join the fight against environmental destruction!
