How To Stop A Runny Nose

By Martin Green

How to stop a runny nose can easily be done after it has become a nagging problem begins with understanding the treatments. Prescription and over the counter antihistamines and nasal sprays can be used. Dietary changes and home remedies, such as eating ginger root and garlic, are also effective when it comes to alleviating the symptoms associated with this problem.

Taking an antihistamine is the most common way to alleviate these symptoms. They are available as a spray or in a pill form, but they both can cause drowsiness when used. If the problem is bad enough prescription antihistamines can be obtained by visiting a licensed medical provider.

Using an over the counter nasal spray can help alleviate symptoms at night so sleep is possible. However, the side effects from these medications can cause more problems later on, so never use them more than three days in a row. A better option is to get a prescription nasal spray and follow the directions given on the bottle.

A simple nasal spray that can be made at home will also alleviate the symptoms without the side effects of regular sprays. This can be made by mixing water with table salt and using an eye dropper to apply it into the cavities. The head is simple titled back as the mixture is squeezed into place, and then it is allowed to pool before blowing the mucus, and the mixture, out.

Dry air can also become an issue because it will cause more inflammation. A humidifier will eliminate the dry air by replacing it with moist, circulated air. This will cause a decrease in the mucus that is being formed.

Hot steam is an easy way to duplicate the results of a humidifier. Water is boiled and then placed into a vase or pitcher from which it is breathed in by using long, slow, deep breathing. The mucus formed inside of the cavities will be dislodged, allowing it to be easily blown out.

Ginger root and cayenne pepper, which is found in spicy foods, will temporarily increase the mucus expelled from the nose. Ingesting these foods effectively flushes the system out which is a way to stop a runny nose for a short time.

Eating garlic, or ginger root, is an addition to the diet that will decrease the formation of mucus. This is caused by an increase in the circulation within the body. Once again, though, this is not a long term fix.

The immune system of the body is one of the most important aspects to be considered. Increasing healthy foods, especially high in vitamin C, will help boost the system. Regular exercise will also help boost the natural immunities in the body, as will staying well hydrated. A runny nose will cause the body to dehydrate, so plenty of water needs to be ingested.

A few simple external factors that should be avoided are cold water and smoke. Second hand smoke, as well as direct smoke, should be eliminated from the environment, as well as staying out of dry and hot areas.
