High blood pressure is a health problem suffered by increasing numbers of people. People who have undiagnosed high blood pressure often end up suffering from serious illnesses because they allowed the problem to get worse without addressing it. While the causes of high blood pressure are not always clear, some can be identified, and we'll be looking at some of these here.

Some pregnant women experience high blood pressure which usually isn't severe but sometimes does need to be controlled with medication. A sudden rise in blood pressure to extreme levels during pregnancy is called preeclampsia and is very dangerous for both the mother and the baby. Women who have high blood pressure before becoming pregnant are at a greater risk for this but it can still happen in women with no history of hypertension. This is the reason that it's so important for a pregnant woman to monitor her blood pressure.

One problem with high blood pressure is that, in many cases, there is no known cause. When doctors cannot find a definite cause of high blood pressure, which is actually most of the time, they call it essential hypertension.

Even though there are many habits and elements that make it more likely that you'll develop high blood pressure, in most cases there is not one simple cause that can be identified. The important thing is that, no matter what the cause, high blood pressure can be treated and managed, either by lifestyle changes alone or with the help of medication.

Leading a sedentary lifestyle with little exercise or physical activity can put you at risk for high blood pressure. Not getting enough exercise and sitting at a desk all day contribute to the nation's high blood pressure epidemic say some experts. It's a proven fact that even a small to moderate amount of exercise can help reduce your risk of high blood pressure. A lack of physical activity in our young people is the greatest risk to our young people where obesity and hypertension are concerned. It is not impossible to reverse this cause of high blood pressure, simply get up and get moving. In conclusion, it can be helpful to look at some of the causes of high blood pressure, such as the ones outlined above. If you have any risk factors, such as being overweight, having diabetes or a kidney problem or a family history of hypertension, you should get regular checkups and ask your doctor about the best way to control your blood pressure.
