How To Install Water Filters Under The Sink

By Robert Short

Everyone would like to have clean, clear drinking water. Water that is free of the impurities collected along the path from water catchment to kitchen faucet tastes better. Installing water filters is not as difficult an undertaking as you may think.

Different filter cartridges are available to filter different levels and types of contaminants in your water. You should choose the cartridge that is right for your area. The hardest part of the job is taking the time to read all the instructions first so this choice is correctly made.

The filtration unit needs to be placed in the cupboard under the sink. It needs to be out of the way so it doesn't interfere with access to the pipes. But, also accessible enough that changing the filter regularly does not become a chore. Position the apparatus where you want to install it and use the holes in the mounts to pencil marks on the wall where the screws will go.

Gather some basic tools so you will have what you need to install the filter unit. An adjustable wrench or wrench of a size that matches your plumbing fittings will be needed. This will be used to undo plumbing fittings and do them up again when the filtration unit has been attached. A drill and screwdriver are all that are needed to mount the unit under the sink.

Use your drill to drill holes at the marked spots. Hold the unit against the wall and using the screwdriver secure it in place. To do this, screw all the screws in lightly, and then gradually tighten each one by moving clockwise around the unit. When you are done check there is no movement in the unit.

Turn your water off using the cut off lever under the sink or, if you don't have one of those, at the meter. If you forget to turn it off you will create a flood in your kitchen when you undo the fittings. When the water is turned off, turn the faucet on to allow any water left to drain out.

On close inspection you will find a flexible hose that connects the water supply with the pipes under your sink. This hose needs to be disconnected from the pipe and reconnected via the inlet of your water filtration unit. Place some paper towels under the hose before you disconnect it to absorb any remaining water in the line. A similar hose leads from the outlet of the unit and you connect this to the pipe under your sink.

Water will flow from the source through the filter unit into your kitchen supply. Check that all the fittings have been tightened properly. It is now time to turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks. When you turn the faucet on, the water that flows will be discolored for a few moments and then will run clear.

Your family will love the clean, fresh water that flows from your kitchen tap. To keep it this way be sure to change the filter cartridges according to the manufacturer's instructions. Installing water filters is a quick and easy task that anyone can do.
