Eating right and exercising right are important when it comes to getting in shape and losing weight. However, the mental aspect tends to be the biggest rate limiting factor here.

Many people, however, simply neglect this aspect of getting in shape.

Thus, without further ado, here is how to increase your mental fortitude when trying to lose weight:

1. Make your goals as specific as possible: Ambiguous goals lead to ambiguous action. Specific goals, however, lead to specific action that gets you to your endpoint much quicker. So avoid vague and nebulous reasons for getting in shape.

2. Measure your progress: The main reason for doing this is to avoid the natural tendency to overlook progress. When you are working towards something for an extended period of time, it's very likely that you will forget how much work you've done.

3. Avoid using a motivational whip: The more you whip yourself into action the faster you will burn out mentally. Whips don't work, instead use a big fat carrot to get you moving. Moving towards something positive is far more sustainable than moving away from something negative.

4. Make everything time bound: Now it's hard to predict when you will reach your ultimate goal, but it's much easier to set time limits on mini-milestones. And the more deadlines you set the better off you will be here because you are more likely to take action.

5. Don't always take baby steps: While it's important to not do too much at once, it's equally important to do enough so that you actually get results. Thus, you need to find a happy medium here. In the end, you should strive to do as much as possible while not burning out.

6. Expect setbacks: Although counterintuitive, the highest performers have the highest rates of setbacks. You see, the more you set out to achieve the more you are going to fail. So expect setbacks and don't let them derail you.
