No More TMJ And Headaches

By Jeff Wrigley

Millions of people all across the world suffer from TMJ and headaches, which is chiefly caused by the malfunctioning of the jaw joint. But what actually does TMJ refer to? Temporomandibular Joint forms a connection between the mandible and the skull. Mandible basically is the jawbone, and specifically the lower jaw.

Temporomandibular Joint syndrome, or just TMJ as it is more popularly known, takes place if the bite alignment is not right. Due to this misalignment or any other dental problem, a person may experience pain that sometimes takes the form of headache.

There are certain degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis which are known to cause loss of the cartilage leading to the disorder. Previous fracture of the jaw can also lead to this condition. People who are stressed and depressed are also known to grind their teeth, which can cause headaches.

The symptoms include pain or fullness in the ear, facial pain and dizziness. The facial pain can be aggravated while eating or chewing on food. Some individuals may even experience pain while yawning, although it is not a fatal disease, it can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. There are a number of treatment options that are available and the choice should be made based on the severity of the infection.

The grinding of the teeth is a cause and using a mouth guard will avoid the headaches from recurring. Use chewable substances, for example, a gum to soothe the jaw and this will assist in repositioning the jaw bone. There are several other jaw physical activities that can be performed daily. By moving the jaw using the mouth gently, this will reduce the problem. Try not to move suddenly because this will only bring back the ache.

As stress is also known to cause TMJ it would be best to try various meditation techniques like yoga and tai chi to help relive it. Sleep for at least eight hours daily to help relax and avoid headaches.

Pain killers are always readily available for reducing any kind of pain. But physicians must be consulted before taking such medicines as they often have serious side-effects.

Some persons usually clamp their teeth together, and it is necessary for the physician to find out the reasons. Persons who have bad temper, always worrying and anxious must make every effort to avoid the clamping.

If a person has facial pain, hard food involving a lot of chewing or movement of the jaw should be avoided. Food habit must be customized accordingly. A heating pad or a warm cloth can also come in handy. As for bodily postures, slouching should be strictly avoided. This would not only prevent such headache but also add to the appearance of the person.

These are some of the remedies to cure TMJ effectually.
