Tips On Choosing The Best Teeth Whitening Kit

By Carl Hartley

When we meet someone new, one of the first things we notice is their smile, and the condition of their teeth. While stubborn dental stains can be expensive to erase professionally, there are many home dental products available today that work both quickly and cost-effectively. Several safe and effective options are available for choosing the best teeth whitening kit for your own needs.

While the most thorough bleaching is still performed in the dental office, it can be time consuming as well as costly. For people without extensive dental work, however, many bleaching systems now available over-the-counter can be nearly as effective. They can often produce quick results with few side-effects. No method can produce permanent results, however, because discoloration is mainly the result of eating and drinking.

There are several basic types of products designed for general home dental bleaching. All have been proven safe, with differing levels of results. Brightening toothpastes, when used according to the instructions, can actually remove stains on the enamel's surface, but do not contain any of the bleaches used in other products. They will not usually irritate gums. Over time, the overall result will be about one shade lighter than before.

Bleaching rinses are similar in appearance to regular mouthwash. They also are helpful in preventing plaque buildup and gum disease, but have the additional advantage of containing hydrogen peroxide. Use of these products will not whiten overnight, but over a period of time there should be a noticeable improvement. Due to its liquid state, lengthy actual contact with stained enamel is limited.

Gels, on the other hand, are not rinsed away, but are usually applied directly to problem areas with a brush. The advantage is simplicity of use. Instructions usually recommend repeating the procedure twice a day for at least two weeks, usually with noticeable results after a few days. The effect of the bleaching lasts up to four months until it becomes necessary to repeat the process.

Tray-style systems were one of the first home products to be introduced. Traditionally sold in the dentist's office, they are now easily available at the drug store, and require the user to fill a custom-fit tray with clear, peroxide-based gel. These trays are worn for a period of hours, or at night, and are generally produce very good results overall.

The newest and most popular smile-enhancers are called whitening strips. These small, bleaching agent-infused plastic strips are easy to wear and difficult to notice in the mouth. They are applied directly to the surface of the enamel, and can produce good results in as little as two hours. This comparatively short duration makes them one of the fastest methods, and the results remain dazzling for several months.

As with any product, one size does not fit all. Check with your dentist before trying any of them, and avoid these products if there are any gum or oral issues that may be irritated. Those with visible veneers, crowns or bridges should never use bleaching agents at home, because they may end up with contrasting shades of mismatched coloration. Otherwise, try each method until you find the best teeth whitening kit for your own use, and then enjoy flashing that brilliant smile.
