Has it become obvious to you that your kids are spending a lot more time indoors than you did when you were a child? I'm sure most of you will answer yes, and this is due mainly to the development of electronic games and gadgets that won't work unless they are plugged into a power outlet. But maybe there is something we can do to change the imbalance. If your family is reluctant to drag themselves away from the computer then we have a few tips to encourage them to spend more time outdoors.
Outdoor play time should become a regular activity that your child does everyday. Encourage them to play outside for a minimum of 30 minutes as soon as they arrive home after the school day. Be firm in explaining that the computer or Play Station will be available to them only after their outdoor time is finished.
Naturally, playing outside is no fun on your own. If you have an only child perhaps you could invite some young friends to come over and play. Of course Moms and Dads can be great playmates as well. Make it part of your daily exercise program. You will get the combined benefit of spending time with your child and getting a healthy workout too. Try teaching them some old fashioned games that you used to play. Believe me when I say they will love it.
Having toys and equipment in the backyard will certainly help with encouraging children to play outside but none of that needs to cost a fortune. For toddlers something as simple as a sandpit will keep them busy for long periods. Older kids love ball games and bikes or even a hopscotch grid made with chalk and a few pebbles. If your yard is big enough then consider a outdoor swing set, trampoline or basketball ring. Don't forget games like hide-and-seek that need no equipment, just their imagination.
You know that outdoor play is vital to your child's well being at a physical and emotional level but its up to you to make the changes happen. Make the change today to start enjoying the fresh air again and both you and your children will reap the rewards.
