Exfoliating Skin with Microdermabrasion: How it Works

By B. Loreto

What exactly is microdermabrasion? There are so many cosmetic procedures out there to improve the appearance of aging skin that it can be confusing The majority of these products and treatments improve the appearance of skin by encouraging the formation of healthy, undamaged skin By removing a layer of skin, the body's regenerative cycle is stimulated, eliminating or softening the harshness of flaws in the skin and replacing them with a healthy layer

Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing procedure that roughly abrades away the outermost layer of skin with a motorized tool. Due to the harshness of the procedure, it is often undergone using local anesthesia or a numbing spray. After the procedure, the face is red and swollen.

Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications to treat the pain and discomfort that will be felt while talking and eating. Staying home from work is recommended for 2 weeks. Your face will be sensitive for 4-6 weeks so avoid activity that might aggravate it. Within 3 weeks the pinkness should disappear from your skin. Sun should be avoided for 6-12 months until normal pigmentation has returned to your skin. Treatment cannot be repeated for another 12 months or until the skin has fully recovered.

All microdermabrasion treatments use some sort of tool with crystals to remove 10-15 microns of skin. For those skin problems deeper than 10-15 microns, microdermabrasion results are less effective. If you are considering microdermabrasion for acne, take in mind that it works best with mild acne and can aggravate severe cases.

It is much less invasive, not requiring anesthesia. It can also be used on the neck, a very delicate part of the body.

Skin will be red and irritated after a treatment, however, one is able to continue life as normal leaving the surgeon's office. Several treatments are required to obtain desired results.

After factoring all costs (anesthesia, hospital, consultations, etc.), dermabrasion can cost form $2000 to $4000, depending on the degree of the procedure. Microdermabrasion cost is negligible in comparison, between $70 to $250 per treatment. Alternatively, microdermabrasion at home kits are available where you throw in a one time cost for a home system as well microdermabrasion products, mostly creams, that mimic the abrasion undergone.

Exfoliating Cream : How Microdermabrasion with a Cream Works

The abrasive nature of microdermabrasion crystals removes dead skin. As the body responds naturally to heal and protect against irritants, this action increases normal skin cell production. Harsh exfoliation pushes the body to manufacture healthy skin cells to replace the damaged ones that have been abrades away. Skin matrix is better organized with larger and healthier skin cells.

The dermal layer of the skin is most affected when microdermabrasion is undergone. Collagen production is increased because fibroblast numbers increase. You can thank collagen for 'tight' skin and thickness. Elastin fibers are related to skin elasticity and multiply in response to exfoliation. Microdermabrasion does stop at just removing dead or ugly skin. It speeds up and improves the quality of the new skin that is being produced.
