High Quality - Rubber Yoga Mat Critique

By Emma Diaz

I even like that it's heavy, it helps tone my arms! I bought the black mat due to great Amazon Customer reviews. Mats that are about one third as thick as this one (1/16") are good for travel or placing under a thicker mat to provide more traction. The average mats are about 1/8."

It's very "tacky" and I have never had any problems with it slipping on hard surfaces, or with my hands or forearms slipping, even while damp with sweat. At 71 inches (that's 5 foot 11 inches), it's also a bit longer than most yoga mats, which makes it nice for when you are doing something like corpse pose.

This mat is a great investment for your body and mind. The texture and grip is superb.

In the end I took the plunge, got the sucker in the mail and have never, EVER looked back. It's amazing how a good quality mat can improve your workout and last a lifetime. I washed it as suggested, with a brush and soap, and let it dry in the sun for 2 days. It still has the slippery film on it, despite all that and using it about 6 times. It is heavy. Pick up a 7 pound weight and see what seven pounds feels like. I had no prior experience with yoga but read that this was a good mat. Upon receipt, the mat has a really funky smell, no doubt due to its rubber-makeup.

When you first use it there may be a slight slip from the film, but the more you use it the better the traction that you get. It always lays flat and does not bunch up like other mats will.

I have a really bad back and I need to do a lot of stretching every single morning and every night before I go to bed. I have tried lots of cheaper mats and none of them were really something I would recommend to someone. Bottom line with this mat: If you are going to use the mat to constantly go to the yoga studio, buy the Purple Travel Mat from Manduka. If you are keeping this Black mat at home and not needing to travel with it, it's an excellent mat. I was expecting a different material, guess I didn't do enough research, the mat is sturdy (fairly smooth, I still practice with an additional layer on top). The thing I don't like so much about it is its weight- heaviest mat I have ever had!

The mat measures in at 1/4" thick which means it's extremely comfortable even if your only using it for stretching as there are some stretching positions that can get uncomfortable with cheaper mats especially if you suffer from pain in those areas anyways. I have now been using this mat for over 4 weeks and it's been such a huge improvement over my previous mats that I felt inclined to come on here and write a review about it.

The sticky mat gripped until I got sweaty then it was worthless. The Mysore rug needed to be so wet to grip that I ended up sitting on wet spots (not fun). I don't really slip except when my hands get really wet. If you do hard core hot yoga, then I'd recommend getting an extra-long skidless towel.
