San Diego Chiropractor Discusses Car Accident Injuries and Treatment For It

By Mike Pritsker

Car accidents and injuries happen every day, some with no injuries at all, some with minor cuts, scrapes, bruises, and others with serious, even life-threatening injuries. The most familiar injury is whiplash, resulting in a stiff and sore neck. Treatment for car accident injuries are usually relatively simple and recovery quick and complete. Other head, neck and back injuries may also occur, along with internal trauma and various broken bones.

More serious head injuries include concussion and traumatic brain injury. Patients with a concussion should follow any and all medical advice and report a report any change in their condition immediately. Traumatic brain injury may be far more serious and require CT or MRI scans for diagnosis. It may result in temporary or permanent brain deficiency.

Back and spine injuries occur frequently in car accidents and may involve muscle, nerves, ligaments or vertebral discs. In much the same way neck tissue is injured in whiplash, the soft tissue of the spinal area may be traumatized causing inflammation and pain. These injuries may require extensive treatment such as prescription medication, ongoing physical therapy or even surgery.

Many of the internal organs of the body can be damaged during a motor vehicle accident. These injuries may be more serious and require hospitalization and surgical procedures for recovery. One of the most serious internal injuries sustained in a car accident is a torn spleen, usually resulting in a lengthy hospital stay.

Broken bones are certainly not uncommon in motor vehicle accidents. Most cases of broken limbs need only be splinted or casted; however, fractures that are more serious may require surgery and physical therapy for complete recovery. Shoulder, hip and knee injuries may require such extreme measures as total replacement.

Every time we start our car, we hope we will not be involved in an automobile accident, but chances are we will be at some time. There is always a chance that we will walk away from an accident with minimal injuries, or better yet, completely unhurt. However, since car accident injuries do occur, it is always wise to be well informed just in case we are not so lucky.
