A few Standard Mold Allergy Symptoms

By Roy Forchet

Recognizing mold allergy symptoms helps determine if eradication techniques are required, as well as which treatments are appropriate. This wide-spread fungus reproduces by spreading its spores. They can be air-borne, or engulfed by raindrops, fog, and dew-drops. People with family histories of allergic reactions to dust mites, pollen, or pets are more likely to suffer from allergies to fungus.

There are several types of fungus which thrive in outdoor and indoor environments. Indoors, it is most common in moist regions, such as in houseplant soils, basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. Outdoors, it thrives on moist grains and grasses, rotting wood, and dead leaves. In the winter-time, this fungus becomes dormant and inactive. It becomes active during the springtime, and continues to reproduce throughout the summer and early fall. Inside, it is active throughout the year. Those who have allergic reactions to this fungus may suffer year-round when the source is indoors, or seasonally when its colonies only exist outdoors.

The most common types that cause mold allergy symptoms include the following. Alternaria, mucor, penicillin, helmin thosporium, rhizopus, fusarium, epicoccum, and aureobasidium or pullularia are among the top irritants. Some occupations have higher risks of being exposed to these potential irritants. They include wine-makers, dairy-people, loggers, farmers, landscapers, carpenters, furniture repair-people, and green-house employees.

The body's mold allergy symptoms include runny nose, coughing, fatigue, headaches, respiratory irritation, sneezing, congestion, aching joints, and itchy skin. When the spores come into contact with nasal passages, they can create hay-fever-like reactions. When they are inhaled into the lungs, they can create asthma.

Those who experience mold allergy symptoms can seek treatments. They include over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants. However, these can make a person drowsy, so they should be taken with caution. There are non-drowsy formulas which are also available. In cases of severe reactions, doctors may prescribe corticosteroidal nasal sprays.

Some precautions can help reduce the occurrence of mold allergy symptoms. When mowing the lawn or gardening, wear a mask over the nose and mouth. Reduction of humidity levels indoors can also be beneficial. Ideally, these levels should be kept to approximately 35 percent. Dehumidifiers, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters on air conditioning units are also effective.

In kitchens, basements, and bathrooms, reducing the amount of moisture will help reduce the presence of fungus. Exhaust fans, open windows, and carpet-free floors are effective measures to take in bathroom areas. Since carpets trap moisture, their use should be avoided in rooms that tend to be high in moisture. All leaks in plumbing systems should be repaired as quickly as possible. Thorough cleanings of sinks and tubs prevent the build-up of soap scum and other films. These provide ideal habitats for fungal growth.

In basements, raise the heat levels to help reduce the humidity. In closets, use light-bulbs or small heaters to reduce the moisture levels. Refrigerator door gaskets and drip pans should be cleaned regularly. In addition, old newspapers, bedding, clothes, books, and magazines should be discarded.

Mold allergy symptoms can be debilitating. However, many precautions can be taken to help reduce their occurrence. In addition, non-prescription and prescription medications can help alleviate the effects when needed.
