Great Marathons For Runners Who Want Great Scenery

By Kamryn Mattson

Runners love to challenge themselves with a good marathon and if you have already tackled the big ones in Boston or New York, it might be time to consider an alternate venue. Consider planning a marathon run in a location that promises the best scenery our nation has to offer. Here are a few beautiful examples.

Enjoy California's stunning central coast with the Big Sur International Marathon, an annual event held in April. Runners will enjoy vistas of the Pacific Ocean, towering forests, hills and meadows. Music is played along the entire trek, and there also will be medical stations, free water and transportation to the starting line.

Enjoy amazing views of fall foliage during the Twin Cities Marathon, which is held in early October. The marathon course begins in Minneapolis and finishes up in St. Paul, passing by the lake, the Mississippi River and some the best neighborhoods in these two picturesque cities. Local bands entertain spectators and runners all along the way, as well. There are events for the whole family, including games and a family mile event, a diaper dash and a toddler trot.

Running at high altitudes can be both difficult and dangerous. One way to tackle a high-elevation marathon that is a bit easier would be to try the Steamboat Marathon. In this journey, runners take a bus up into the mountains at a starting elevation of more than 8,000 feet. From there you head downhill to a final elevation of just over 6,700 feet in the lovely town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

If muscle pain is keeping you from running or perhaps making you rethink an upcoming marathon, you can use a kinetic performance system to help reduce muscle soreness and speed up the healing process. These systems were designed using the science of kinesiology and have a central point which protects the sore area and special arms that reach out and grab strength from nearby muscles. They allow much more freedom of movement than braces or complicated taping.

There are a variety of systems available and each one was specially designed for a particular area of the body. There are localized and generalized knee systems, lower and upper back systems, shoulder systems and systems for both the outer or inner elbow. Because they use a strong, medical-grade adhesive, they will not come loose during vigorous activity, including your marathon run.
