Simple Methods To Prevent Colds And Flu With Essential Oils

By Bonnie Fowler

Research into the medicinal actions of essential oils has consistently emphasized a few particular benefits. Some of the most important, and most clearly effective, are the uses for oils to prevent and treat infectious illness. No need to wait and catch a cold to see if aromatherapy will work for you! Using a few oils consistently throughout the cooler months can keep you and your family healthy throughout the season.

The easiest method of using oils for immune support is simple inhalation. Inhaling essential oils has two important aspects: The oils come in contact with the cells of the respiratory system, and they're circulated throughout your body. How is it you can catch a cold from someone (who is already ill) sneezing? It's by inhaling the microbes that they've spread into the air. When essential oils are absorbed through the cells in your sinuses, bronchial tubes and lungs, they directly support immunity in these cells, while having systemic actions as well.

Research on cellular immunity with essential oils from viral invaders is limited in this way: most of the data involves essential oils being used for protection from the herpes virus. That's because it's easy to study -- many people are infected, and whether treatment is working or not is obvious. But essential oils do appear to prevent cells from becoming infected if oils have been absorbed by them first. There's no reason to think this should only happen with the herpes virus -- we need just pair up the right essential oil with the potential pathogen. So rather than melissa, we might choose bay laurel, hyssop, or thyme oils.

After essential oils are inhaled, they enter our bloodstream in small but measurable amounts. Research has shown inhalation of eucalyptus to cause cells of our immune system to work harder at attacking and eliminating foreign invaders. Concurrently, the oil reduces inflammation in our respiratory system, an effect that directly counters the result of viral infection.

Essential oils vaporized into your surrounding environment has proven antimicrobial effects as well. Research indicates vaporized oils can dramatically reduce airborne microbial counts, and even destroy microbes on surfaces. This inactivation goes on inside the body as well. So with diffusing essential oils, you eliminate these little buggers in the air, on surfaces and in your body all at the same time. Oh, and it'll smell nice, too!

The easiest way to support immunity with oils is to carry a small vial of an antimicrobial oil (or blend) with you and inhale from it a few times per day. It has been shown that blue gum eucalyptus oil alone can boost immune function -- though its anti-microbial properties are not so strong. For a blend with a more complete action, use equal parts of eucalyptus, laurel leaf (potentially the most antiviral oil for protection from respiratory ailments) and tea tree -- maybe with a few drops of melissa in there for good measure.

For a more profound, holistic action, use these same oils in a nebulizing diffuser -- one that makes a mist of pure essential oils (without water). An even more powerful blend can be made by including melissa and lavender in your formula. Set one up in your home and/or workplace with a timer such that it turns on for 5 minutes every hour. In this way, you're constantly exposed to the oils' vapor, and the environment is being disinfected at the same time.

Topical application, or use of the oils in baths are also excellent therapeutic means. Many users find these oils can be used "neat", but certainly dilute in a carrier if there's any chance of skin sensitivity (or if using with children). Massage small amounts daily into the chest bone, under the chin and on the sides of throat, and all around the ends of your feet. A few drops into a drawn bath allows for both absorption through the skin as well as inhalation.

So if you're wanting to not catch anyone's cold this winter, and perhaps even prevent your entire family -- school kids and all -- from doing the same, get yourself set up with antiviral essential oils and a diffuser. Won't it be a much nicer Fall and Winter with everyone staying happy and healthy!
