Acne Blemishes: Pimples, Zits - Complexion Blemishes

By Hillary Feber

Many people ask themselves: what causes acne? The sebaceous glands located in each hair follicle produce oil that lubricates the skin and keeps it soft. If this oil becomes trapped, bacteria multiply in the follicles, and the inside lining of the follicle becomes damaged and swollen.

Acne is not caused by dirty skin but rather it is the result of over active sebaceous glands. The excess sebum makes the pores sticky and allow the entrapment of bacteria. Skin problems like blackheads, pimples, zits and deeper skin pustules form when sebum combines with dead skin cells.

Some of the factors that contribute to acne include genetics, oily skin and hormonal changes. Allergies, stress, nutritional deficiencies, over-washing and repeated rubbing of the skin can also contribute to and aggravate acne.

Acne skin care is one of the ways to combat acne. There are several habits you can incorporate into your skin care regimen that can have a significant effect on reducing your acne problems.

Daily Acne Treatment

In general, the first thing you must do is reduce or control sebum production. One of the best and most gentle ways of controlling sebum production is cleansing your face with a mild product to remove excess skin and oils. This step will also help keep the proliferation of bacteria under control.

When you cleanse remember to be gentle with your skin. Stay away from harsh loofahs and rough towels when it comes to drying your skin. Instead, pat your skin dry with a soft towel.

Do not use hot water, but luke warm water instead. If the water is too hot, it may aggravate your acne or lead to dry skin and rashes.

After cleansing, use a mild toner or astringent to help you remove any remaining dirt and refresh your skin. Then use an appropriate moisturizer and acne cream.

It is a good idea to pick a moisturizer containing essential elements that replenish your skin's natural components and an acne cream that attacks acne with natural ingredients so that it will not dry out your skin.

Exfoliation is also essential to maintaining healthy skin. Once more, remember to be gentle during the exfoliating process. The harsher the product, the more likely you will damage your skin.

You can use natural exfoliants, such as milk, strawberries and sugar, to help remove dead skin cells without removing your skin's essential oils. You can also find over the counter exfoliating creams will be gentle with your skin.

Consult your dermatologist if you have severe acne like cystic acne. There are several treatment options for this type of acne.
