The Common Causes Of Dental Irregularities

By Melissa Smith

A number of us have some type of teeth misalignment. The oral dilemma may be gaps between the teeth, crookedness, overcrowding, or protrusions. In time, we become accustomed to the irregularities and hardly ever complain about them, not unless they cause us discomfort.

Dental imperfections can affect a number of aspects of one's life. It can have a bearing on one's self confidence, considering that most people with dental alignment issues cover their mouths while talking in order to hide their presumed flaw. These people cannot express themselves fully, nor are they given to spontaneous fits of laughter. Dental irregularities can also affect one's nutrition. Usually, teeth misalignments make it cumbersome to chew hard foodstuff, pressuring the person to subsist on soft foods, which does not usually make up a balanced diet.

Genetics is often the largest contributing factor to teeth alignment irregularities. Nevertheless, apart from genetics, dental imperfections can also come from external elements. Some of these causes are the following:

Trauma - Playing rough and coupled with minor mishaps can cause children to loose or fracture their teeth. These fractured teeth will be replaced but may bond with the bone that surrounds it. This is called ankylosis - the abnormal joining of the tooth to the bone - and it is a major reason children grow up with crooked teeth.

Thumb sucking or pacifier use - Children who suck their thumbs or use pacifiers for a period longer than normal, they could risk having protruding front teeth when they grow up.

Early loss of baby teeth - When primary are lost earlier, the secondary (permanent) teeth have no "tracks" as to where to come out through the gum and could erupt in the wrong way.

Usually, people just take it as their hard luck to live with dental flaws. Some think of them only as minor annoyances, limiting only when they are in social encounters. However, some oral flaws could lead to other issues that could have been forestalled if the dental irregularities were fixed sooner.
