Chiropractic Care Changes Lives For Those Who Suffer Lumbar Radiculopathy.

Sciatica is the sensation of pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks and/or legs produced by an irritation of the sciatic nerve. Multiple nerve roots extend from the spinal cord in the lower lumbar spine and join with the sacral plexus to form the sciatic nerve, which branches into the peroneal and tibial nerves as it descends into the knees and feet. The primary causes of sciatica are herniated or bulging discs, subluxations (when one or more bones are out of alignment), spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, or cancer. All or one of these conditions can induce pressure on the spinal nerve roots that in turn can cause leg pain.

While X-rays and MRI can help rule out a serious injury, a detailed medical history and physical exam are much needed to correctly determine the precise cause of the symptoms. An EMG may also be necessary to evaluate the extent of neurologic damage. There are more studies that need to be done to prove the effectiveness of EMG studies.

A chiropractor can play a very important role in diagnosing your sciatic pain because chiropractors are known to take a very thorough history with comprehensive musculoskeletal and neurologic exams. Posture, skeletal structure, and gait are also evaluated during your initial consultation with a chiropractor.

Once the consultation and exams are completed and analyzed, a chiropractic treatment plan will be outline. A typical regimen for care may include spinal adjustments, ice/heat, massage, physiotherapy, exercise, and potentially spinal decompression therapy. Spinal decompression treatment is safe, non-surgical, painless, and has been shown to have great results in alleviating pain from lumbar radiculopathy that is due to disc bulge or disc herniation.

Chiropractic care is a drug-free method for relieving sciatica. Studies have shown its effectiveness in relieving pain and lasting results. The cost is extremely low compared with surgery. With chiropractic care and proper diet and exercise, people can have a normal life in no time!
