To avoid having minerals crystallize and form kidney stones, eat a high fiber diet containing phytates. A bread or cereal made of whole grain will serve as a fiber rich food. One way to avoid the pain of kidney stones is to eat foods that have a high potassium level. Seafood, tomatoes, bananas, avocados, and potatoes are excellent sources of potassium. To alleviate kidney stones from occurring you can eat the recommended 5 servings of vegetables and or fruit each day.

There will be foods you need to stay away from while doing this diet plan. Most pre-packaged food is known for being quite salty, and this is not what you want if you are trying to avoid getting kidney stones. Kidney stones are formed due to deposition of salt minerals in the body. It may not be possible for you to eliminate salt completely from your diet, but all the same, you should try to cut back on it to lessen the possibility of these developing.

Meat and other protein-rich food, such as eggs and nuts, have high purine content, which can cause kidney stones to develop. Oxalate-rich foods and drinks like spinach, rhubarb, chocolate, coffee, tea, and sodas can cause kidney stones to develop.

While calcium is needed by the body, an excess of it can be absorbed by the kidneys, forming the stones. Avoid drinking milk and eating yogurt. The oxalate in urine can go up due to excess intake of vitamin C, which is not advisable. Ideally, get your necessary dose of Vitamin C through food, not supplements.
