Having An Eagle Eye For Healthy Vision

By Ashley Houston

Several medical professionals believe that ensuring healthy vision is of greater importance to women than men. As women age, they become more prone than men to vision issues, and this would even include blindness - these are the latest findings according to a report released by the National Women's Health Resource Center: Women and Healthy Vision. Fortunately there are ways to keep your eyes healthy. How about these ideas?

Quit smoking NOW! Non-smokers are not as susceptible as smokers would be to the dangerous condition called age-related macular degeneration, or AMD for short. And AMD happens to be the most common cause of blindness for people over the age of 65. While there are some ways to slow its progression, there is no cure.

Be properly attired if you expect your eyes to be exposed to the sun for some time. Just think about the marvelous impact having these two accessories can bring to your eyes - they would become eighteen, repeat that, eighteen times safer from UV rays! Should you wear contacts, your optometrist should be able to prescribe special anti-UV ray contact lenses.

Watch your weight. One of the more prominent effects of being overweight is the occurrence of Type 2 diabetes. For women under 65, diabetic retinopathy happens to be the leading cause of blindness. Moreover, the Harvard Medical School's Nurses' Health Study recently released figures that show clinically obese women as being 36 percent more likely to develop cataracts than normal-sized women.

Take fish oil supplements daily, or eat fish two or three times a week. There is some tangible proof that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and other products can help reduce the chances of AMD. On the flip side of things, you will want to reduce the amount of vegetable oil.

Make it a point to eat fruit thrice or more a day. Compared to average women who eat 1.5 servings of fruit a day or less, women who eat twice that amount or more are 36 percent less susceptible to AMD.

Eat spinach. That's right, it's not just Popeye who can benefit from spinach, but Olive Oyl as well - spinach contains high doses of lutein and zea-xanthin, which are two antioxidants that can help minimize the chances of AMD and other eye conditions. Other good sources include any kind of leafy green vegetable such as collards and kale, as well as eggs and orange-colored fruits.

Set an appointment with your optometrist at least once every other year to get a complete check-up. If you suffer from poor vision or have diabetes, you might be better off visiting him more frequently.

Get a walk in every day. Especially if you have glaucoma, do so for at least 40 minutes a week, four times a week - a study involving glaucoma patients showed that those who engaged in such an activity were able to get off their glaucoma medication due to the reduced pressure in their eyes.

Change your eye makeup every three to six months. Bacteria can easily contaminate makeup and if not replaced regularly, could lead to eye infection.

Don't fall asleep in your daily wear contact lenses. They're called daily wear for a good reason, after all.
