Tips for Choosing the Best Toenail Fungus Treatment

Stop living with ugly toenail fungus and get a toenail fungus treatment plan that works.

The medical term used to describe a fungal infection that affects the finger or toenails is commonly known as onychomycosis. It is usually more common that the toenails become infected when compared with the nails on the fingers. There are several signs and symptoms that indicate a person is suffering with a toenail fungal infection.

The symptoms that are commonly seen are discolored nails, usually yellow or white, thick or brittle nails, a nail that has lifted from the toe, crumbly nails, or nails that curl either up or down or are distorted in some way. Depending on the severity of the condition, some of the symptoms can be rather painful.

Anybody, regardless of age or sex can contract a fungus infection affecting the toenails. Although, reports do tell us that the symptoms are more common in those over the age of 60. Those that are unfortunate enough to suffer from respiratory and circulatory diseases have also been said to be at a higher risk of developing the condition. Another common illness that has been associated with the development of fungal infections of the toenails is the common condition; diabetes.

Even with so many known symptoms, it can sometimes be difficult to realize that a fungal infection is present. It's also difficult to determine the exact origins of an infection. If you have any concerns about whether or not you have a toenail fungus infection you should visit your doctor for a proper diagnosis. Once your doctor confirms that you have a toenail fungus infection, the right medication or treatment plan can be provided.

There are a number of medications and remedies available for use by those that are afflicted with toenail fungus. The oral medications work by promoting the growth of new nails that will eventually replace the toenail that's infected. These oral medications usually have to be taken for 6 to 12 weeks before successfully curing the condition.

It is usually advised that those which have a history of liver disorders or heart problems to stay away from these types of medications. Topical treatments such as steroid creams are also available to treat certain types of infection, although using the creams on their own is simply not enough to cure most infections that may arise.

There are some things that you can do to take care of your nails and possibly prevent a fungal infection from occurring. Try to use shoes that provide your foot with good support and plenty of extra room for your toes. Pointed shoes should be avoided at all costs. Wearing socks that are manufactured from 100% cotton as well as making sure they are always clean and dry will help greatly in preventing an infection from taking place.

One last bit of advice that will help you keep your toenails healthy is maintaining a short length. This helps by reducing any trauma to the nail that occurs when if it is banged against hard objects or the inside of your shoes.
