Caring For The Ears

By Bob Evans

The ears may seem to be small and insignificant but their function is all too important especially when it comes to communication. A hearing that is impaired may cause you to miss a lot in this life. So even though ear problems are not as serious as cancer or heart disease, you should still take care of your ears as you would the other organs of your body.

When cleaning the insides of your ears, avoid using sharp objects such as toothpicks or matchsticks as they can cause injury to the walls of your ears and your ear drums as well. This may sound funny but some people do this. Use appropriate ear cleaning tools such as cotton buds to keep your ear safe.

Wear ear protection when going to noisy places such as rock concerts or parties. Loud music and sound can prove damaging to your eardrums and can leave you semi-deaf after. Earplugs help regulate the amount of sound that enters your ears so don't forget to bring them. The same goes when you're deep sea diving. Guard your ears from pressure by wearing earplugs.

Being involved in physical activities like sports can also expose your ears to danger. Make sure you wear ear pads or a helmet when playing sports that involve heavy physical contact such as boxing, hockey and baseball. Using ear protection will guard your ear against heavy blows.

Sometimes what you think as deafness is actually the result of mucus being accumulated in from the inside of your ears. This is usually caused by sinus infections due to sinusitis or allergic rhinitis where your mucus membrane overreacts and produces excess mucus. If you have any sinus conditions, have it treated to clear your ears from clogs.

Visit an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist once in a while and have your ears checked for potential problems. Most of all, never ignore an ear condition no matter how less serious it may seem to be. You don?t have to lose your gift of hearing by doing so.
